ARLINGTON — Through all of the encouraging text messages and phone calls received in the 24 hours after he learned he was the new baseball boss of the Texas Rangers, general manager Chris Young said on Thursday that he was in no mood to celebrate.

His good fortune came at the expense of Jon Daniels, Young’s friend, front-office teammate and mentor who was fired Wednesday in a move that caught the entire organization off guard. Young confirmed that the decision came as a complete shock to him.
