Cole Ragans joins Second-Timers Club on latest Texas Rangers Baseball Podcast episode

FORT WORTH — Quiz time: Which of the pitching prospects at Double A Frisco had the lowest ERA as of May 16?

A. Jack Leiter

B. Zak Kent

C. Cole Ragans

D. Cody Bradford

The answer, as everyone expected, is Cole Ragans, the left-hander had a 2.79 ERA through his first six starts of the season.

He’s pitching well, and his presence was requested on Episode 35 of the Texas Rangers Baseball Podcast. Ragans obliged and joined John Moore and me last week from Tulsa, Okla.

It is Ragans’ second appearance, so we didn’t have to go through the

Ragans said his twice rebuilt elbow is no longer a concern as long as he does the required maintenance work between starts. He has started throwing a cutter after having trouble landing his slider consistently, though he’s still a fastball-changeup guy.

He also talked about the relationship he has formed with Bradford, built in part on their similar pitching styles. They have been on the same team the past two seasons. Both are married, and their wives have become friends, too.

Before Ragans hopped on the show, Moore and I talked about the big-league club, namely the struggles of Marcus Semien and the successes of Martin Perez. We also talked about the minor leagues after Ragans left, and I made a confession, with a perfectly reasonable explanation, on why I was ejected from the stands at one of my son’s baseball games.

Is the players who are not labeled “ prospect “ , not worthy of reports, news, interviews, . Texas has some outstanding relief pitchers. Some of them could be starters if the organization would let them. I think if you spread the interest around, more people would stay excited about the future. Keep up the good work.

We had a podcast with Double A Frisco reliever Chase Lee, and I wrote a notebook a couple weeks ago with a nice note on Marc Church. I’m trying to touch as many as many guys as I can. Thanks for the question.
