False start: Jacob deGrom held out of first spring bullpen session

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Right-hander Jacob deGrom, who signed a five-year, $185 million contract in the offseason to lead the Rangers’ pitching staff, was held out of his initial bullpen session of Rangers spring training because of tightness in his left oblique.

General manager Chris Young said that deGrom reported feeling the discomfort a few days ago after his sixth offseason bullpen. DeGrom also told the team
