Friday on the Farm: Bullpen candidate Marc Church and his rapid pitching ascension

(Texas Rangers/Bailey Orr)

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Marc Church was dead set on going to college to be a shortstop.

He was committed to North Carolina A&T and had told his high school coaches that he was not interested in pitching. An arm injury could delay his development into the next Derek Jeter.

That lasted until the final fall tournament of his senior season, in 2018.

Then, a teammate popped off and bet Church $50 that he couldn’t throw a pitch 90 mph. He could.

“Next thing you know, I came out in the spring, pitched in front of a lot of scouts, and it took off from there,” Church said.
