Friday on the Farm: Cole Winn went back to work to remain an elite Rangers prospect

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Veteran players know all too well something that all young players need to learn.

Cole Winn learned it last year.

Baseball can humble a player, quickly and without remorse, and it can take time to get back in its good graces.

Winn was the 2021 Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year after dominating the Texas League with Double A Frisco. He finished with two strong starts at Triple A Round Rock, and with all the uncertainty with the Rangers’ rotation entering 2022, it was all but certain that Winn would make his MLB debut around June or July.

“He just thought Triple A would be a check of the box and off to the major leagues,” minor-league pitching coordinator Jordan Tiegs said. “Why would he not think that?”
