Friday on the Farm: Rangers’ top minor-league performers in May

(Hickory Crawdads)

ARLINGTON — The Rangers have already announced four winners for their monthly minor-league honors for May — player, pitcher reliever and defender.

The Rangers Minor League Defensive Player of the Month was outfielder Alejandro Osuna, who at 21 is playing for a third season at High A Hickory. A native of Mexico, he is the younger brother of former big-league closer Roberto Osuna (awkward) and the nephew of former big-leaguer pitcher Antonio Osuna.

He has something in his bloodlines, at the very least, and he entered the weekend tied for the team lead in home runs (5) on a club that has struggled to score. He’s not part of the problem with a .263 average, though he is striking out more than he would like and not walking as much as he did last season.

While the Rangers loved Osuna’s defense in May, others in the organization posted terrific numbers that caught the eye of the Rangers and Rangers Today.

Here are some of the standouts from May in the Rangers’ minor-league system.

Lobus seems like a great candidate for a podcast appearance soon. The minor league episodes have been a great addition.

Thanks. We’re trying for fellow Hickory right-hander Joseph Montalvo this week.
