Friday on the Farm: Tracing the steps Rangers system has taken in two years

(Frisco RoughRiders)

When I’m not working for Rangers Today, I’m working for Frogs Today, a couple Japanese outlets and the occasional story for programs the Rangers sell at home games.

Baseball America also enlists me to help cover the Rangers, and two years ago assigned to me the Rangers chapter for their annual Prospect Handbook. It was quite an undertaking, and I was knee-deep in it this time two years ago.

Minor-league baseball was coming off the canceled COVID season, so no one really knew what kind development took place. The MLB Draft was shortened to five rounds, and, boy, absolutely no one liked what the Rangers did. The system wasn’t considered to be toward the bottom before the 2020 season was nixed.

As such, the Rangers opened the 2021 season with the No. 24 farm system in baseball. They have a chance to enter 2023 with a top-five system after finishing this season at No. 6.
