FORT WORTH — Brett Martin had errands to run Thursday morning on the Rangers’ off day and a golden retriever who needed a bath.

He probably didn’t need to take a chunk out of his day for the Rangers Today Baseball Podcast, but he did.

The next day he recorded the first save of his MLB career.

He didn’t know Thursday that he would be asked to pitch the ninth inning Friday and Saturday.

Martin also didn’t know that entering the season only three other American League left-handed relievers had made more appearances than him over the past three seasons. He’s now second to only former Rangers reliever Jake Diekman.

Selected in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Rangers, Martin has the second-longest consecutive tenure in the Rangers’ organization behind right-hander Jose Leclerc. Left-hander Martin Perez has the most years in the organization, but the past three seasons with Minnesota and Boston.

There’s more to know about Martin, including how he juggles diabetes with being a professional ballplayer.
