SURPRISE, Ariz. — Jacob deGrom completed 25 throws at 45 feet Wednesday, the first day of Rangers spring training, and will continue his gradual build-up from Tommy John surgery throughout camp and into the regular season.

The session marked the second for deGrom this week, with Monday marking the first time he has thrown a ball since before underwent the second Tommy John of his career in June.

He said he isn’t just lobbing the ball 45 feet, which is two-thirds the distance of the pitcher’s rubber to home plate. The throws were popping the glove of head athletic trainer Matt Lucero.

“They would have gone 60 feet,” deGrom said.

I sent deGrom a letter and an inage of him that I requested him to sign. I guess, I’ll see in a few months if he signs it (10% chance maybe). I told him he has the 4th lowest expansion era ERA of any pitcher with 1000 or more innings pitched and that he could win many Cy Young awards in the future. I hope he recovers well and gets to read that stat.
