Rangers: Max Scherzer won’t pitch again this season, postseason ‘unlikely’

Max Scherzer has a minor strain of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder and likely won’t pitch until 2024, Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday.

The right-hander was placed on the injured list before the Rangers played the third game of a four-game series at Toronto, and the Rangers had yet to formally discuss which pitcher would take Scherzer’s spot in the rotation.

The injury does not require surgery, but Young said that there isn’t enough time for Scherzer to rest and rebuild his arm strength over the rest of the regular season, and Young said the postseason was “unlikely.”

Scherzer will be evaluated in two weeks to see if he might be able to pitch in October if the Rangers qualify for the postseason.
