Rangers notes: Max Scherzer clears first hurdle after back surgery

(AP photo/Ross D. Franklin)

One of the busiest Rangers on Saturday at Fan Fest was Max Scherzer, which doesn’t necessarily sound quite right for someone who underwent back surgery Dec. 15.

He sat for around 30 minutes for a Q&A with Eric Nadel, then held two sessions of Story Time with Max Scherzer for children 10 and under. He didn’t want to be seated for much longer than those took to avoid any back stiffness, hence he was not among the Rangers players and coaches who signed autographs.

The right-hander was in high spirits. Scherzer just cleared the six-week mark after a discectomy that will keep him out of the Rangers’ rotation until the summer.

The initial mental grind now behind him, he said he is three weeks away from being able to ratchet up his rehab.

Stop being chinchy with Adolis. You can’t win an arbitration. What the hell is going on here. Did Jerry Jones send someone over to the Rangers front office.

Teams almost always win arbitration hearings, as they have better data. One site predicted him at 5.1 million, and some comps showed him closer to 5 than 7. It makes more sense to be frugal when the player is under team.control for 3 seasons regardless vs on free agents, who aren’t obligated to play for the team. Given the tight budget and how playoff performance doesn’t factor into it (I think), it makes no sense to let Adolis get whatever he wants.

I wonder people who have TJS are supposed to sign autographs (deGrom), or if that harms progress. I also want to point out that giving a player 1.9 million more 1 year in arb means you pay maybe 2.5 million more the next year and then 3 million more the year after that since arb salaries are based on prior years.
