The Sunday Read: Rangers Opening Day roster projection 3.0

(AP photo/Julio Cortez)

Spring training has entered its final week. The Rangers will break camp Saturday afternoon and fly to the regular season.

They will do so with some of their roster decisions made but will have to wait as long as possible before determining which way they will ultimately go with their 26-man Opening Day roster.

Why the wait? They need to be as confident as possible that Josh Jung and Corey Seager are healthy and that Jonathan Hernandez needs to start on the injured list. Those decisions, whichever way they go, will have a trickle-down effect.

Other factors play a role, as well.

How many spots on the 40-man roster are there for non-roster invitees?

Which players have minor-league options remaining?

Are their any free agents, trades or waiver claims that would make the club better?

How do the Rangers best preserve their depth?

Including the three with health questions, 15 players are on the roster bubble. Wyatt Langford is in the group, though it would take some serious explaining if doesn’t make the team. Jack Leiter has pitched his way into roster consideration.

In the spirit of Selection Sunday, here’s the third crack at the Rangers’ Opening Day roster.

  1. deGrom Texas Ranger March 17, 2024

In MLB 23 the Show, I found this roster update a few days ago, and I started a franchise with it. Seager, deGrom, and Adolis are all rated 99, and everyone gets a high boost, though I changed Langford from 68 with A potential to 99 overall with decent defense, max power/plate disc/vision and great contact. I started a franchise, and the main point is Montgomery was a free agent I got for 2 years 15 MM with a player option. He was looking for 5/55 or so (87 overall). Snell was at 5/110 or so, but then Bauer (80 ovr) came at 3/13 with a player option for year 3 and Urias (77) came at 5/12 MM! I then signed Sasaki and some third baseman from Japan for 1/80k. My point is that if they added any of those (Monty, Bauer, or Urias this year) or Sasaki next tear, I would be thrilled. I also traded Duran, Leody, and some prospect for Clase and then some random depth for Bednar. I really really would love that, too! If only I were the man in charge of Texas…
