Rangers Today Baseball Podcast goes back to the minors with prospect Dane Acker

(Rangers Today/Jeff Wilson)

FORT WORTH — Dane Acker is a native Texan who ended up pitching in 2020 at Oklahoma, such that the 2020 college baseball season was.

It really wasn’t a season, as the NCAA thought it should shut down all spring sports.

MLB owners wanted the draft cut to only five rounds to save money.

But Acker managed to squeeze enough out of both, as his briefly performance at Oklahoma convinced the the Oakland A’s that they should draft him in the fourth round.

They did, and then turned around and traded him seven months later to the Rangers in the Elvis Andrus deal.

Acker is in Arizona ready to come back from Tommy John surgery. He’s close to doing so, and when he does he has a chance to shoot higher up the Rangers prospect rankings.

He joined John Moore and me Thursday from the players village across the street from the Surprise Recreation Campus. He’s a good dude, and his control has come along way since he threw a golf club intended for his brother through a front window at the family home in Brenham.
