T.R.’s Memoirs: Texas Rangers were on the road on 9/11. This is how they found their way home

I was sound asleep in a comfortable bed after covering the Texas Rangers’ 7-1 loss to the Athletics the night before at the Oakland Coliseum.

The phone rang and I mumbled hello. The voice on the other end was in an agitated state of alarm.

“TR, where are you?”

It was Cody Bailey, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s assistant sports editor in charge of baseball. Good friend … but a little excitable.

“In my hotel room in Oakland,” I answered, wondering where the hell he thought I would be at this hour of the morning … sometime before 8 a.m. West Coast time.

“Thank God you are all right,” he said.
