Texas Rangers Baseball Podcast: Mega-show with Mike Maddux, Jacob deGrom

FORT WORTH — Here’s how the sausage was made for Episode 63.

Pitching coach Mike Maddux agreed to come on the Texas Rangers Baseball Podcast shortly after he was rehired. It might have been the holiday spirits talking, but he never wavered in his commitment to appear in studio Friday.

He agreed before the Rangers announced that they had signed free-agent right-hander Jacob deGrom and before they announced a Thursday press conference at Globe Life Field.

What if, I pitched to the Rangers, deGrom slid on the podcast while in town?

Possible, the Rangers responded.

John Moore, meanwhile, had to travel Friday to be the flower girl in a wedding in Austin, so everything had to happen Thursday. Maddux moved, no problem, and was going to stand alone as his own kick-ass episode if something funky happened with deGrom’s schedule. However, the Rangers found 10 minutes for deGrom to do a Zoom call.

We turned it all over to producer Joel Perez, and, voila, here is Episode 63.

Maddux talks about what he knows so far about the Rangers pitchers staff and deGrom. He reminisces some on his favorite pitchers (he said afterward that he wished he had mentioned Derek Holland, so there’s the mention), and talks about how much he likes the win for pitchers.

DeGrom meanwhile, talks about a lot of the things he spoke to during his introductory news conference, but also dishes a little deeper about his relationship with team doc Keith Meister and how nervous he gets when watching his 6-year-old son play baseball.
