Friday on the Farm: Success in winter ball gives Cole Winn needed boost

SURPRISE, Ariz. — MLB teams look at winter ball as an opportunity for player development or for a player to catch up on time he missed the previous season.

Once a player arrives, though, he quickly realizes that what matters most to their winter teams is winning.

Former Rangers first-rounder Cole Winn never wanted to not win the past two seasons with Triple A Round Rock, but the minor leagues are development-first and, boy, has Winn been trying to develop.

Stuck in a high-walk, high-ERA rut, the next step was a change of scenery.

    Even a slughtly above-average performance in that pitcher-friendly league means something. I hope he’s at least a good reliever in the near future.
