Rangers might have caught a break after Corey Seager’s early exit

The Rangers played arguably their best baseball last season with Corey Seager on the injured list with a hamstring injury.

Fortunately, they might have avoided having to do that over the next month.

Seager, the 2023 World Series MVP, left Wednesday’s 9-1 victory over the Tigers in the second inning after pulling up while running to first base following an RBI single. Seager tried to stay in the game, but the Rangers tended to him early into the next at-bat and removed him from the game.

However, manager Bruce Bochy said afterward that the Rangers were just being cautious with their All-Star shortstop, who was diagnosed with left hamstring tightness.

“We’ll see where we’re at after the day off,” Bochy said. “We don’t think it’s anything serious, but we just wanted to get him off his legs. He might need another day.”

Bochy said that Seager will not have an MRI exam.

The Rangers are off Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Giants. The Rangers are also off Monday.

The Rangers have been without third baseman Josh Jung most of the season because of a broken right arm, and Seager slumped early in the season after missing much of spring training following surgery for a sports hernia in late January.

He has found his stride, though. Seager saw a 16-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday, but his single Wednesday extended his on-base streak to 28 games. He swatted 11 home runs last month and has raised his batting average to .271. with an .832 OPS.

Both lead the team.

Josh Smith moved to shortstop in the third inning, and Ezequiel Duran, who was picked off as a pinch-runner for Seager, took over at third base. Smith started the Rangers’ third with a home run.
