ARLINGTON — Max Scherzer was not placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday morning as the Rangers set their Opening Day lineup, and with good reason: He’s not as far away from pitching this season as originally thought.

The right-hander said that he threw his first bullpen session Tuesday since undergoing surgery Dec. 15 for a herniated disc. He felt fine Wednesday and again Thursday, which told him he’s about two months away from pitching in a major-league game.
