Max Scherzer pleased with latest step back to Rangers’ rotation

ROUND ROCK —  Max Scherzer has compared how he feels in his recovery from back surgery to how he has felt at various points during past spring camps.

For instance, when he threw his first bullpen session earlier this month at full strength, it was akin to his first bullpen at spring training.

His first start on rehab assignment Wednesday night also drew a spring comparison.

“Kind of the the three innings, the three ups,” he said. “I’m going to continue to build my arm up. I’m going to try to get up to 100 pitches, and I’m in the process of doing that. Hopefully the next time out I get to 65 or 70.”

Scherzer wasn’t chasing results for Triple A Round Rock, just as he wouldn’t in a spring game. He was building up for the regular season, and his 2 1/3 innings at Dell Diamond represented his next step on his way back to the Rangers’ rotation.
