Rangers still haven’t announced day for Max Scherzer’s 2024 debut

ARLINGTON — Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer was expected to make his 2024 debut this weekend, but what seemed like a sure thing at the start of the week remains to be determined.

The right-hander hasn’t pitched the season because of offseason back surgery and a nerve issue in his thumb that developed after his first rehab start in late April. He made two rehab starts last week earlier this month with Triple A Round Rock and should be able to throw 90 to 100 pitches going forward.

Manager Bruce Bochy, though, said that right-hander Jon Gray will have the start Saturday for the Rangers and that the Rangers will check with Scherzer on Saturday to see if he can go Sunday.

“We just want to make sure nothing is wrong,” Bochy said. “That’s all.”

Does that mean something is wrong?
