Rangers scratch Max Scherzer from rehab start with familiar thumb issue

ARLINGTON — Right-hander Max Scherzer’s return to the Rangers’ rotation has been put on a temporary hold after he developed some thumb soreness, but neither he nor club officials are concerned that the three-time Cy Young winner will miss more than a few days.

The issue isn’t a new one for Scherzer, who said he experienced it last season and pitched through it. However, the issue led to forearm stiffness that created a shoulder injury that put him on the injured list and forced him to miss the first two rounds of the postseason.

The discomfort triggered his memory of last season, and he wanted to stop any potentially larger issues before they started.
