Friday on the Farm: Examining Rangers’ break-camp rosters

Spencer Hales will start the season at High A Hickory but could ascend to Double A Frisco (Hickory Crawdads).

Minor-league baseball starts today, with the Triple A seasons beginning across the Pacific Coast League and the International League. The other three full-season classifications start cranking next Friday.

The Rangers’ Triple A club, Round Rock, was scheduled to open Friday at Dell Diamond with Owen White on the mound. Fellow right-handed prospect Jack Leiter is expected to start Saturday, and big-league rehabber Michael Lorenzen could start Sunday.

The Rangers have had an idea of where they would assign their players for at least a week. Some decisions were easy. Some decisions weren’t made until the major-league roster was settled Tuesday afternoon.

The break-camp rosters were released Wednesday with some notable assignments. They show depth in the organization, even with top prospects Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford big-league regulars.

Keep in mind that assignments are often made with the expectation that they will be temporary. If a player performs, he will be rewarded with a promotion.

The rosters are set up for some players to move quickly.

Here’s a look at the Rangers’ four break-camp rosters.

Antoine Kelly is still under 25 and should be a top prospect mentioned here.
