ARLINGTON — Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer threw another bullpen session Tuesday afternoon and said that his next step is to throw live batting practice next week.

The three-time Cy Young winner, who is returning from a Dec. 15 operation to repair a herniated disc, said that the bullpen session would be the equivalent of his first bullpen session during a normal spring training. He said the next step typically is live BP and then pitching in a game.

The Rangers begin a three-city, 10-game road trip Friday at Houston, and manager Bruce Bochy said that Scherzer will be traveling with the team. The Rangers expect Scherzer to return in mid- to late-May, ahead of the initial June timeline shortly after his surgery.

“Today was a really good day,” Scherzer said.
