Rangers set Opening Day roster after finding room on 40-man roster

ARLINGTON — General manager Chris Young laid out the Rangers’ Opening Day roster Wednesday, barring something wildly unexpected happening.

All was quiet at the team workout after Young met with the media and overnight, and the Rangers submitted the same 26-man roster to MLB on Thursday.

What Young didn’t have for the media was how the Rangers would find room on the 40-man roster for first baseman Jared Walsh, right-hander Jose Urena, and, of course, outfielder Wyatt Langford.

Young knew that someone would take the roster spot of infielder Jose Barrero, who cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple A Round Rock. As expected, right-hander Tyler Mahle was placed on the 60-day injured list as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, but right-hander Max Scherzer (back) was not.

Instead, the Rangers swung a trade, sending right-hander Zak Kent to the Guardians for international bonus money.

So, Scherzer will start the season in the 15-day IL along with first baseman Nathaniel Lowe (right oblique) and right-handers Michael Lorenzen (neck strain) and Jonathan Hernandez (right lat). Mahle joins righties Jacob deGrom and Carson Coleman, who are also rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, on the 60-day IL.

Lorenzen has been dealing with a sore neck, which prevented him from pitching Monday and Tuesday in exhibition games against the Red Sox. However, he threw live batting practice Wednesday and afterward said he felt fine.

Also of note, right-handers Diego Castillo and Jonathan Holder were released from their minor-league deals. Infielder Matt Duffy was re-signed to a minor-league deal assigned to Triple A Round Rock. Catcher Andrew Knapp, left-hander Danny Duffy and right-handers Austin Pruitt, Adrian Sampson and Jesus Tinoco were also assigned to Round Rock.

Infielder Justin Foscue and right-handers Grant Anderson and Marc Church were optioned to Round Rock (AAA).
