Will Smith shoulders blame as Rangers surrender another late lead

ARLINGTON — Will Smith didn’t want to talk to the media Monday night.

He had just allowed allowed three eighth-inning runs and was tagged with a blown save as the Rangers dropped the opener of a three-game series to the Red Sox, 4-2.

The guess is he wanted to crawl into a six-pack of Miller Lite or a bottle of tequila.

“This one definitely falls on me,” he said.

While it would have been nice for the offense to generate some more runs and for the Rangers to have added another arm at the trade deadline, the bullpen’s woes continued. Smith was his own worst enemy.

Don’t blame pitching when you score two runs and lose. 6-9 should be the goal. Expect to lose when scoring less than 4. Just look at this month’s results and tell me I’m wrong. Some guys need to change their 2 strike approach or else go ahead and schedule their vacations to start in early October.
