The Surprise Five: Rangers edge Royals in spring lid-lifter

(Texas Rangers/Bailey Orr)

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Cactus League games don’t matter, they say, especially early on.

Don’t get too high or too low when it comes to the final outcome or player performances, especially early on.

Both statements have been proven to be true.

But Friday felt different for the Rangers, who beat the Royals 5-4 at Surprise Stadium in the spring opener for both clubs.

The Rangers played for the first time since Nov. 1, when they won Game 5 of the World Series for the first world championship in franchise history. More eyes than ever were upon them. They raised a World Series flag in right field, hoisted by longtime fan Cal Kost.

The Cookie Lady must have been thrilled, plus she loved a spring win as much as anybody.

Every game produces noteworthy moments, and this one was no different. Here, back from the attic, is the Surprise Five.
