The Sunday Read: Early offseason scattershooting as Rangers look at 2023

Chris Young has to fly first class, right?
He’s a general manager and a longtime MLB pitcher, so cost isn’t an issue. But he’s also 6-foot-10 and badly needs the legroom.
Even on a short flight to Nashville, where Young reportedly traveled last week to visit his former manager, Bruce Bochy.
There’s clearly interest on the Rangers’ side in hiring Bochy as their new manager. Bochy is probably intrigued, too, though the word is
No more Wash. He is not a good game manager. He is the epitome of the Peter Principle. See Game 6, and the Game 7 pitcher selection, among many other managerial goofs while he was here.
I always heard from the media that the players played hard for him, but when the question was put to them, they could never name a single player who wouldn’t play just as hard for most other managers.
The Rangers did well in spite of Ron Washington.
Agree with Bennie. Hard pass on Wash. Even overlooking the WS missteps he also dealt with personal issues that obligated him to step away. Someone will want the challenge of bringing this team out of this tailspin. Find that person and hire them!
I don’t see a route for the manager job that doesn’t ruffle some section of the fan base feathers. I would prefer a younger hire, with experience as a Bench Coach. Bochy is the only older manager I’d consider a strong option. Outside of him, Will Venable, Matt Quatraro, Joe Espada, or Don Kelly would be a hire I could be excited about. But I think all signs indicate Bochy is the hire come 11/05.
