The Sunday Read: Rangers-Trevor Story rumor took off, even though it ignored common sense

The Trevor Story rumor as it pertained to the Texas Rangers was true.

They did contact the best remaining free agent, an act that likely helped Story’s market and allowed fans’ imaginations to run wild even though signing him didn’t make very much sense in relation to “the plan.”

The plan, for those who have been following the Rangers, is to continue developing players this season even though they have spent more than a half-billion dollars to upgrade their roster.

General manager Chris Young said March 11 that the Rangers aren’t putting any limitations on what the 2022 Rangers might be able to do, but also that it’s going to be hard to make up 30 games in the standings from last season.

Yes, plans can change.

Alas, Story agreed to a six-year, $140 million deal Sunday morning with Boston, and a Rangers rumor that spread like a wildfire was put out.
