The Sunday Read: Carter-Langford spring pairing offers a look into Rangers’ future

(Rangers Today/Jeff Wilson)

One of the biggest surprises of Rangers spring training came last weekend.

Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter had never met until eight days ago.

Langford dropped that nugget Feb. 16 as he met with the media for the first time, and Carter confirmed the news 24 hours later on his first day in camp.

“I did at breakfast,” he said.

Since Monday, they have had plenty of time to get to know each other.

The outfielders worked in the same group during full-squad workouts, going from field to field and drill to drill together. They then batted second and third Friday in the Cactus League opener.

Carter has made the Opening Day roster based on what he did in 75 plate appearances over the final four weeks of the 2023 regular season and 72 plate appearances in the postseason. The Rangers don’t win the World Series without him.

Langford still has to win a spot. After his first week in camp, some think it’s his spot to lose.

I’d love to see a roster projection article soon. I’ve been having a hard time finding a spot for Langford on the opening day roster without an injury. Now if Seager’s injury is gonna put him on the IL then I agree that it’s his spot to lose. But with Duran, Smith, knizner, and Jankowski all healthy, I’d expect Langford to start in AAA
