The Sunday Read: Why the Texas Rangers’ offseason plans shouldn’t be just about next season

(Rangers Today/Jeff Wilson)

The annual after-the-season news conference was short on details from Texas Rangers brass, not that they would ever publicly divulge their plan for the upcoming offseason.

In their defense, they hadn’t formalized a plan yet.

That all changes this week at the Surprise Recreation Campus in Arizona, where club officials and scouts will hold their annual pro scouting meetings that serve as the design phase of the offseason.

The Rangers will discuss players throughout the system, not just on the 40-man roster. They will explore potential trade targets, building on conversations started at the trade deadline and identifying players who could be had.

The Rangers will pin down which free agents they want to approach with all that money they say they have to spend.

Sounds simple enough. Right? Well …
