SURPRISE, Ariz. — Sebastian Walcott turns 18 next week. He’s been facing pitchers this spring who are nearly twice his age on the back fields and is holding his own.

He’s not getting ahead of himself, as he explained Friday on the upcoming episode of the Rangers Today Baseball Podcast. Episode 111 should be ready for public consumption this weekend.

Before sitting down during the Rangers’ game against the Royals, Walcott played in an minor-league instrasquad game that featured Danny Duffy facing Jon Gray. No, they haven’t been reassigned to minor-league camp.

Neither has Jack Leiter, at least not yet.

Here’s the Surprise Five from Friday.

I also observed independent of these comments that Jack Leiter has far better command this game than before, as his misses were not far off. He also looked dominant, as the hit was a blooper, and the homerun was the only other hit. He may have walked 2 and struck out 1, with 2 ER, but this is one of the tines I would love to see a 6 ERA outing for him. His ERA is just 3.86, which is building off his great end to last season. I have faith that Sonny Gray helped him with his pitching.

He’s a different pitcher, for sure. It’s also important to remember that this is only his third season as a pro.
