Watch outfielder Derek Hill make catch of the spring for Rangers

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Derek Hill very likely will not make the Rangers’ Opening Day roster. The outfield was already crowded enough, and then Wyatt Langford has stamped his claim to be an everyday player.

But Hill has had a nice spring as an occasional starter and backup in Cactus League games, and the Rangers have been impressed with what he’s done.

He made the play of the spring for them Wednesday at Goodyear Ballpark.

The Rangers had just taken a 6-1 lead in which Hill singled and scored on a grand slam by Marcus Semien. Right-hander Dane Dunning was still trying to find his rhythm.

Semien made a nice sliding back-handed play to retire Mike Ford for the first out. Mike Trautwein followed with a drive into the gap in left-center field. Hill laid out for an amazing catch that was captured by Bret Kelly of KTVT/Channel 11.

“What a play, huh?” manager Bruce Bochy said. “That’s as good a catch as we’ve seen all spring.”

Hill said that he thought he had a chance when the ball came off the bat. He credited the coaching staff for the work they have done with him on his reads and jumps.

“Not too shabby,” he said. “Right when it went up in the air, I saw it hold up a little bit and, honestly, I thought, ‘I’ve got a shot at this.'”

He did, though the landing was a bit bumpy.

“The landing didn’t feel great,” Hill said. “I’ll probably be sore in the morning.”
