What Rangers GM Chris Young, Jacob deGrom are saying after Tommy John news

ARLINGTON — The target date for Jacob deGrom to return is August 2024. That’s why he is having Tommy John surgery next week rather than waiting to see if rest and rehab would work for the most infamous elbow in baseball.

His ulnar collateral ligament was always going to tear, right? That’s what everyone who questioned the Rangers’ decision to give him a five-year, $185 million contract said in December and what those same Einsteins are saying now.

The Rangers knew the risk, too. General manager Chris Young doesn’t seem to regret the deal at all, but he regrets that he won’t have the world’s best pitcher available for the next 14 months.

Young, though, also knows what a lot of people seem to be forgetting: The Rangers have won more games than any MLB team the past five weeks without deGrom and there’s no reason why they can’t continue to win.

Why did it take so long to discover a tear? I would’ve thought an MRI would be a day 1 after injury thing.

What does the “Einstein” comment mean? That some people critical of his signing were “know it alls”, or that they proved correct?
The fact that the team is playing well without DeGrom simply shows the two are not related? I hated the signing personally as I thought the risk wasn’t worth a potential of a bad contract saddling the team down the road.
The Ray Davis is gonna be fine narrative I’ve heard and read elsewhere is odd to me. He can’t be happy and you definitely want a happy owner.
DeGrom , Odorizzi, and Rocker were all investments by the club and all are getting surgery. That’s on Chris Young at least a little, but no beat writer has written a word critical of that trifecta.
This is CY’s first full year at the helm. Give him the credit he deserves when he deserves it…no doubt. But cmon.

Pitchers get hurt all the time. There’s risk with each one of them. If you want to blame Chris Young, that’s fine. There’s still years and years left to determine if these are bad signings. Beat writers generally aren’t suppose to criticize. The DMN has a couple. Not sure what they’ve written.

The Rangers are winning without deGrom. They’re not going to stop. The Einsteins line is directed to people who are celebrating being right about the injury.
